Students make a small book comparing metric with customary (standard) units in categories of length, capacity, and weight. On each of the 8 pages, the students draw a picture showing an object that is measured in the unit given and shows how many of other units it equals. By having your students make this book, they will visualize and compare the 2 kinds of units of measurement.

I graduated with an undergraduate degree in social work. I was a music major as well for 3 of those years. Afterwards I moved from Wisconsin to Montana and worked as an orthodontic assistant and eventually a newspaper advertising executive in Missoula, Montana. After 10 years there and 3 children under the age of 4, my family and I moved to Houston, Texas where I worked on my masters in elementary education. After working as a third grade team leader and teacher for over 24 years, I hope I can help others with ideas I have used in my classroom!
