This is the KEY for the test I give at the culmination of my Midwife’s Apprentice Unit. It is a multiple-choice exam, which I give on Scantron forms. It goes over all the literary elements and literary devices and techniques that we studied through The Midwife’s Apprentice readings and discussions.
This is the test I give my regular English students, not my advanced English students. There is a difference in rigor on these tests. The regular English test has four choices for answers, while the advanced English test has 5 choices for answers. The advanced English test has some different questions as well. Doing my tests this way gives me one more level of differentiation for the advanced English students.
Again, this relates to the California 7th Grade ELA Content Standards, but you can get ideas for creating questions for other pieces of literature based on an examination of the questions on these Unit exams.

I have taught every grade level from first through eighth in my twenty years of teaching. At both the elementary and middle school levels, I have worked as a Curriculum Coach and mentor teacher. Adolescent Skills, Study Skills, Journalism, ELD, English, and Advanced English are some of the courses I have taught. I have been teaching and continue to teach English, Advanced English, and ELD at the middle school level since the year 2000. I am presently teaching 7th grade only.
