Investigate the mixtures and patterns resulting when gumballs are placed in water. The ingredients in the gumball mix with water to make a solution (sugar and water), a colloid (smaller pigment molecules and water), and a suspension (larger pigment molecules and water). Observe the patterns resulting from different placements of gumballs in water.
This series of activities uses everyday gumballs to take students through levels of scaffolded inquiry. Students observe, compare and investigate the interaction of gumballs with water. The dispersion of colors and patterns are amazing. Scaffolded inquiry (Directed, Guided, Connected and Full) provide essential support to help students construct the skills and knowledge needed to conduct independent inquiry.

My students had so much fun with this lab! They could set up the entire lab on their own and I was free to ask higher level questions because they knew exactly what they needed to be doing and what to look for.
