This bundle includes ...
PRESENTATION: A Smart Notebook presentation of ten pages introducing the dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, and atlas as reference books. The pages focus on the purpose of each book, what type of information that each book provides, and sample pages of the different books. The last slide is a drop and drag activity requiring kids to read six different task cards and identify which reference book would best be referenced.
WHICH ONE GROUP ACTIVITY: The group activity consists of five different sets of reference task cards. Each card asks a question and requires students to decipher which of four reference books: dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, or atlas would best complete the task. I have also included an instruction sheet with further explanation.
WHICH ONE INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: A sort activity in which students will cut and paste reference book task cards to a graphic organizer. An excellent follow up to the group activity.
ENCYCLOPEDIA: Three different worksheets pertaining specifically to the encyclopedia. The sheets can be adapted for both print and digital encyclopedias. Wksht #1 allows for students to explore an encyclopedia and record three people, three things, and three places. Wksht #2 wants students to record both an entry word and a notefact. Wksht #3 requires students to read eight questions, circle the keyword, and answer the question.
DICTIONARY: Complete lesson plan that specifically outlines how to teach online dictionaries to young students. The lesson is geared for second graders, but could easily be used for a grade or two higher. There is a guided practice sheet, an independent practice sheet, and a blank sheet. The blank sheet can be adapted with your own words.

The introductory reference notebook file was perfect in holding my students' attention and thorough in content. Then, we used my school library's 1974 set of World Book Encyclopedias to complete the "Bananas for Encyclopedias" activity. We completed the first two pages with partners and then the last two pages with table groups. Even though the encyclopedia set we used was old, we were able to complete all questions. The students were completely enthralled in this activity. They were eager to get the next set of two or three encyclopedia volumes in our table rotation to learn about the next topics. I am eager to use the final two activities (Monkeyin' Around with the Dictionary and "Which One" Group and Independent Activity) in this bundle next week with my students. This is just what I was looking for. There is not much out there for this standard, and this budle was just the ticket!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught third and fourth grade for twelve years and learned that many nine and ten-year-olds have not only lots of spunk and energy, but a great sense of humor! I was lucky enough to teach two cycles of a third to fourth grade loop. I was a self-contained classroom and taught all subject areas. My passion for both literature and burgeoning technology sent me in pursuit of a degree as a school librarian. I have been working as a school library media specialist for the last three years in a PreK to grade 5 elementary school. I have recently discovered the amazing world of educators sharing their bountiful ideas, lessons, worksheets, and units on websites like Teachers Pay Teachers. As a former teacher, and current library media specialist, I was thrilled with the idea of finding new materials created by other teachers and sharing some of my materials with other librarians.
