In order to help my students write their final essays, I compile a list of quotes from the book that can be used to support either perspective of the question they are answering. I find that my ninth graders spend too much time going through the book looking for quotes and I would rather them spend their time developing their arguments and completing each step of the writing process. Since Monster is the first book that we read in the year, the next unit they work in groups to create the quote list and finally at the end of the year they will make their own. It is a very helpful process in teaching the skill of pulling out information and quotes from text.
