Mother's Day Original Poem Template - Use for Other Poems, too!
Now that April Poetry Month is coming to an end, your students are ready to try their hand at writing an original Mother’s Day Poem. Here is a foolproof graphic organizer for a poem that’s sure to please. I have used it for many, many years, and it’s always a big hit. There is one template for the rough draft and one for the final copy. One rough draft template has been adapted for use to create a Mother’s Day poem. The other rough draft template can be used to write a poem about anything. I added a Grandmother’s version for those students who will be making it for their grandmothers. There is also a “special person” version.
I have also provided 2 styles of each version: skip count baselines, as well as plain lines.
Title: Whatever the student decides once s/he has written the poem
The first line is the word the student uses to refer to his/her mother: Mum, Mom, Mommy, Mother, Mama, etc.
The second line consists of 2 adjectives, describing words, that tell about the student’s mother: kind, caring, funny, wonderful, outgoing, etc.
The third line consists of 3 –ing words that tell things the student’s mother does: laughing, loving, kissing, hugging, cooking, caring, etc.
The fourth line is a complete sentence about the student’s mother:
She is the best mother on Earth.
I love when she tucks me in at night.
She is my best friend.
The last line is a feeling word or a sound word, a clincher: Love, Forever, Amazing, Woo-hoo!, Hooray!, etc.
An illustration along with the poem makes a perfect Mother’s Day Gift.
I have also used this template for students’ favorite sports, favorite places, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc. The poems are always quite impressive. I’ve used them for displays, and people always loved reading the poems. You can illustrate with simple crayon, watercolors, colored chalk on construction paper, a crayon resist and more
