This activity teaches the use of Motifs and Symbolism in the novel, The Outsiders. The format, however, can be adapted for other novels or short stories throughout the year. This lesson is one that we use to increase comprehension of higher level ideas and author's purpose. We use The Outsiders to teach these concepts due to the popularity of the novel with the students. They understand the story and are highly motivated to learn more about the underlying ideas.
