This literacy center activity is for recognizing and sorting parts of speech, namely nouns and verbs. To make this center self-checking I get the very small dot stickers from Staples. I put one color on the backs of all the nouns and add a matching sticker to the back of the corresponding mouse tub. Use a second color for the verbs. After sorting all of the words students flip the pieces over to check if they are correct. Also included with this center is a worksheet which allows the student further practice, and a Title sign that can be use on your choice board or activity center assignments.

Hi Chery.
I downloaded your Mouse Tubs Center last week. It is a very cute game, but my daughter and I realized something while playing (we homeschool). A LOT of the cards are words that can be both nouns and verbs (ie. hug, run, play, pen, cop, bike, etc.). She is a "first grader" (but works at a second grade level) and she actually discovered this on her own. We decided that the best solution (while we were playing) was to make another "tub" for words that are both nouns and verbs. Thanks for a great activity turned critical thinking exercise. :D

Thank you so much for the feedback. Yes, I did include those dual words for a reason. My reasoning was that at a Kinder/First level I would simply have students divide the words into nouns and verbs. At a first/second grade level I would hope that the words would be looked at on a different level (just like your daughter did) and so could be used again at a later level when that distinction can be made. Your suggestion of having a third tub for words that are both nouns and verbs is great. I hope I can go back on at some point and add it. Thanks again for you great feedback!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for over 30 years both in the United States and Internationally. I am currently doing a K-1 loop and LOVE teaching both Kinder and First Grade. My favorite part of my classroom day is watching my students using resources I have made and knowing how much they are learning while having so much fun.
