Have fun with this packet and "Movie Time" is a 19 page PDF file for working with real and nonsense words. There are popcorn containers and popcorn where the students sort and match where the real and nonsense words go. Their answers are recorded on a corresponding recording sheet which is included. A Common Core State Standards poster is included in the packet if you need to post the standards that you teach in your classroom. Many standardized tests now endorse using real and nonsense words; Dibels, AimsWeb and Orton Gillingham support the use of nonsense words for students in developing phonemic awareness. The standards that are aligned with this packet are listed below:

Phonics and Word Recognition RF.1.3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs (two letters that represent one sound). Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words. Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

How do you like using DIBELS? My county doesn't use it and I wish we did. There is also a Movie Time II for larger nonsense and real words as well. Thank you so much for visiting and purchasing from my TpT store.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a teacher in both special and regular education since I graduated from Berry College in the spring of 1976. I am currently in first grade and teaching in a Title I Distinguished School and a School of Excellence in Alpharetta, Georgia and I truly love it! I have been in the classroom since I graduated and have also been an interpreter for the Hearing Impaired for both the general public and for those who want to learn sign language on a personal level. What has my experience with TpT done for me personally and professionally? That is easy to answer because the changes were immediately noticeable. I have become a better teacher because creating materials for TpT has increased the depth in which I think about what and how I want to teach concepts to my students. I am always seeking new ways to create new ideas and new assessments for my students. On a more personal level the funds I make from TpT go to help my son, a veteran, who came home a wounded soldier. He requires therapy and my TpT funds go towards assisting him to put his life back together again after serving for over eight years as a Marine and in Iraq.
