Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan is an excellent choice for the middle school reading classroom. Although some teachers use the novel in 4th or 5th grade, I believe the topics addressed in the book (independence, personal growth, civil rights, economic disparity, racism, etc.) are topics essential to teaching middle school students.
This is a complete, age-appropriate multicultural novel unit for Esperanza Rising. It includes:
1) 19-day lesson plan with daily theme and homework assignments
2) Class activities to integrate other subjects (history, economics, language arts, social/emotional learning and Spanish)
3) List of novel project ideas
4) Reading guides for every 2 "chapters" & answer keys
5) Two vocabulary review sheets & answer keys
6) Spanish vocabulary activity & answer key
7) Novel test & answer key
A great resource for any teacher who wants to incorporate various themes and subject matters into the novel unit.

Hi - I do not outline specific core standards with each activity but I always have them in mind as I create the content for the unit. Of course, your implementation of this unit and your own style of teaching will determine how aligned the standards are to the actual novel unit. Hope that helps.
If I purchase this does it have everything I need to make it into a month long lesson. Is everything detailed? Are answer keys for everything included? I looked at the demo but didn't clearly understand the T-Shirt activity. Is there more instructions if I purchase this. It went from day 1 to day 7. Is this just because it is an example and not the real thing. Will it have outlined each day? I teach this book in 6th grade. Is this unit age appropriate or too low?
Hello, the T-Chart is simply drawing a two-column chart with the headings "Title of Article" and "Economic Problems" the groups find in the Depression-era articles groups read.
Yes, the preview only shows days 1 and 7 to give a sample. These are an indication of how detailed the lesson plans are but the product contains each day. (A guide but the resources can be used with your own ideas and state/school district requirements for reading and other subject matters.) The plan spans 19 days but depending on your pace and time allotment for reading class, this can be expanded to cover 1 month.
All assignments and assessments include complete answer keys. I teach reading in grades 6-8 ad this lesson unit should not be at a level that is too low.
