Looking for a way to differentiate the curriculum through Language Arts?
This is a project that is based on the multiple intelligences. Students take a multiple intelligences "test" and then the teacher groups students together based on their strengths.
NOTE: Sometimes, you may have a class full of one kind of intelligence, and so you may find it necessary to group students together based on their "second" strength.
Once you assign the groups, then studnets choose jobs. Each group needs a President, an Art Director, A Fact Sheet Coordinator, & a Story Leader.
Then, the group must choose an author & short story to study off the list provided.
Finally, the group must choose a project connected to their strength. There are 5 entry points for students to access their strengths. Each entry point gives 2 choices of projects that harness their intelligence. The group chooses one project and since they have already chosen jobs and their author/short story, they are ready to begin!
What's great about this project is that it shows kids that everyone is smart - each in a different way. Then it goes on to allow students to "show off" their "smarts" by working in a group and then showcasing that work in front of their parents.
NOTE: The end product is called The Student Forum. I have had this right after school in our school's library and have had each group plan their presentation to last about 4 minutes. Parents are placed in groups of 4-6 and each group begins at a different table. After the 4 minutes are up, (I time it), then I ask parents to kindly move to the next table. There is a 1 minute changing time so that parents can rotate around. Once all groups of parents have seen all the presentations, then I thank our visitors for coming and we have cookies and punch. Generally, the entire program lasts about 1 and 1/2 hours.

I am in my 18th year of teaching. I taught for ten years in the Orange County (Florida) Public School system at primarily the sixth grade level. During that time I taught Language Arts, remedial reading, social studies and exceptional student education (aka special education). Then for 6 years I taught sixth grade Math, Language Arts and Social Studies to sixth graders in a private, independent school. Now I am back in public school and am teaching students with Special Needs.
