Improve student's critical thinking while helping them to apply the Law of Syllogism and the Law of Detachment to combine statements. As a hint of where to start, look for statements that contradict! Instructions: Someone was murdered! Use the laws of logic to determine who was the murderer. All suspects are all truthful people (except of course the murderer.) When no name is specified, the subjects are talking about the murdered person. Can you figure out who is telling the truth and who is lying?

This could really be a useful resource, but it needs to include a step-by-step logical process of elimination so that the final 'answer' sheet is actually a useful teaching guide as well. Simply providing the name of the killer doesn't support students as they develop their ability to reason.

Maybe it's been a long week, but I have no idea how to do this worksheet! I just downloaded it and I'm really confused - am I missing something super obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't know how to find the murderer...

I hope this isn't a terribly dumb question but I cannot figure out your worksheet! I just purchased the Murder Mystery puzzle and can't figure out where to start or how to find who the murderer is. I tried working backwards after looking at the answer but I'm still lost - help? :)

The law of Syllogism is that if a then b and if b then c, we can conclude if a then c. The law of Detachment is that if a then b and you know a to be true, then b must be true.
The best way to start this puzzle is to find two people that contradict each other. For instance, one person says the dead person had a cat named fluffy, and another said the dead person did not have a cat named fluffy. One of these people lied. All the rest are telling the truth. Try to put together the true statements so that you can figure out who is lying. The liar is the murderer.
