Of all the American Revolution novels I have taught in grades 5-10, My Brother Sam is Dead is my favorite because of its development of characters, crisp dialogue, presentation of themes involving the effects of war on a family in a Connecticut community and the young narrator. It is a timeless, sensitive war novel whose issues could apply to any war. It lends itself wonderfully to reading the dialogue out loud as if it were a play and even so-so readers are motivated to try reading the dramatic parts out loud. (Well...some do like to read the cuss words out loud...very loud! Be warned!)
I have included about 25 activities sheets: comprehension questions plus answers, a character chart showing how characters change due to the effects of war plus answers, how to understand better and recall more clearly key scenes in a novel using key quotations plus answers, 2 essay tests and 1 makeup test
I am glad that it will be of use. I love using the book, especially doing dramatic readings with the students in the class. (They like reading the cuss words out loud)
Let me know if I can help in another way.
