It is a rare thing for teachers to focus as much on vocabulary in math as they do in reading and language arts. I use My Math Dictionary for students to keep a record of all of the math vocabulary we encounter throughout the year. Students write the word then explain what it is in their own words. Next students explain what the word is not. This is usually the opposite of what it is or something that is usually confused with the real definition
(Ex. Numerator is the number on the top and it is not the Denominator which is on the
bottom). In the illustration section, they can show an example or draw a diagram to show the word in use. Please see the example on the second page. This was created by Elizabeth Hill and she has used it in her third grade classroom for the last 2 years.
A unique activity that combines numeracy and literacy! Very useful for helping students understand the meanings behind the numbers. Thanks for sharing this free resource!
