A set of writing activities centered around a monster made with playdough. Students need one mini-container of playdough and an assortment of craft items. Once the monster is created, students can write how to directions, a friendly letter, an informational report, a warning note, a poem, and a descriptive writing piece.

I used this for my kids to make "snow monsters" using some "magic snow dough" I made. I extended upon this lesson and even had their creations "come to life" overnight (AKA: I moved their monsters and left behind little notes for them to find on their desks)....May have been the most magical lesson I did all year! My first graders got to do this right before winter break and truly loved it! Thank you for the ideas, it helped make some sweet memories for my first graders!

I am going to use this in October and I think it will be a great way to get the kids thinking creatively. I am using writer's notebooks but will often through out various ideas to help get the "juices" going. I also like the hands-on approach to the creative process. I have taught for 16 years in a large, urban, public school district (I have taught in three different schools) and I LOVE it! I taught self-contained, multi-age gifted class for past seven years. Prior to this assignment, I taught regular ed 4th and 5th grades. I am now in an at-risk school teaching 5th grade! I am so lucky to have such great students, past and present!
