My Schema File contains items to make a file folder for each student! It is a concrete way in which students can practice activating background knowledge, record new learnings and analyze their misconceptions. Students write their thinking on post-its and then manipulate them during and after reading. This works really well with non-fiction texts!
Students really enjoy using this reading tool! Hints: students should write down page numbers on post-its in which they record new learnings or better understandings and go back to find that info easily. Also, it would be beneficial to make a giant schema file for the class to use during modeling, lessons, and share-time. Lastly, to make them last longer, laminate them.

I love this! I teach second grade and I'm just getting ready to introduce schema. Having the file represent their schema is a great analogy and resource for them. I had a little poster with explanation/illustration but this is even better. Thanks so much! (especially for adding the freeness factor!)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been a teacher in my mind for as long as I can remember! So many times, I fought with my sister and her friends to listen to me teach little lessons and grade fake papers. "School" was my favorite thing to play! Now I get to play real school everyday! I have been a "real" teacher for four years. My second home is in a bright, colorful third-grade classroom in Iowa full of bright, colorful little learners.
