Go beyond typical multiplication tables and charts by teaching your students the history behind multiplication before calculators. John Napier devised rods based upon multiplication tables to perform more complicated calculations. This lesson lets students build their own set of Napier's bones and perform multiplication with them. Overhead's included. This makes a great evaluation lesson for teachers and pre-service teachers. Designated for fourth grade students, but this lesson can be adapted for older students as well.
