PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Narrative writing has changed quite a bit with the Common Core Standards. The following lesson provides an in depth approach to teaching narrative writing in the 6-8th grade band. Students will be creating a memoir based on a moment from their own lives. They will also be reading and interacting with various narrations to give them a broad example of what narratives are. Reading material, worksheets, rubrics, narrative examples, and pictures are all provided. Students will be learning to focus in on the moment through sensory details, discovering essential background information, and establishing a clear theme. Students will be analyzing various narratives and reading literature texts until they are clear on what is important in creating their own personal narratives. Students will take their work completely through the writing process including brainstorming, plotting out their narrative, peer review with peer reviewing guides, revision, and publishing. The lessons are broken into five separate parts allowing for time to rework and revise. This lesson aligns exactly with the Common Core and includes readings from the actual Core.

This is a very thorough unit, but turns out it was not what I was looking for. I would have liked to preview more of it before I bought it. I am in a self contained K-6 sixth grade and I think this is more geared toward a 6-8 middle school. Not a bad product, just was looking for something different.
On  November 2, 2012M Hennessy answered:
Sorry about the confusion. I will go back in and put a note to hopefully help clarify.

Product Questions & Answers

On  January 31, 2013Tracy Mendez (TpT Seller) asked:
I like several things you have to offer. Does all of your items clearly outline the common core standard each lesson meets. I am new to common core. I am trying to make it easy and change my teaching. Our admin is making our lesson plans a nightmare. I need them for me to guide me through each day. Not just to look good on paper. I am thinking instead of teaching a daily lesson that I want to do a unit each month. Then I could have one unit of lesson plans with everything they want to see, but have them for want I NEED to be prepared. My thoughts are each month to have a unit and then from year to year adjust them as needed. Any advice????? I teach 6th grade language arts.

On  February 1, 2013M Hennessy answered:
Units are a wonderful way to incorporate the Common Core. I recommend building units on top of each other. The Common Core has three main types of writing Narrative, Argumentative, and Information/Explanatory. You could start out with a month centered around a Narrative piece, next month Argumentative, third month Informative, and then go back to Argumentative, but build on what was done previously. Students will be able to remember more that way. My units outline what you are doing from day to day and focus on writing portion of the Core. When I teach, I work on units that include all sections of the Core. For example, we read argumentation documents, write an argumentation paper that has Language (grammar) components, and have some sort of speaking/listening portion presentation. I don't know what state you are in or if your school district would be interested, but I've been trained in my state as a national facilitator for the Core. In my state we are doing an advanced training that focuses on creating lesson plans and assessments. Let me know if you or your district is interested and I can give you the contact information for my state Language Arts head. One last thought on the units, focus on an overall real world question such as What does it mean to have courage? Students really will think about how this influences their lives. Did this help at all?
