You may be wondering what a National Fair is! Well, at my school it is a 44 year-old tradition done every year in fifth grade. It is a six-week-long project where each student selects a state (a different state if possible). On the night of our fall Open House all the students are set up in the gym with their presentations. It is usually all out! Students work on a printed report, memorize a speech, dress as an historical figure from their state, have a food that is representative of their state, etc. This is done in several curricular areas over the six-weeks period. Traditionally at my school, 3rd and 4th grade each do a Texas Fair (over cities and famous Texans). Then in 5th grade it is National Fair. Our fair is done in coordination with the 6th grade International Fair. It is done along similar lines, but over a country of the student�s choice. The forms and information included here could be adapted to work with a state fair or an international fair, if desired.

Included in this document are 28 pages of ideas and examples, including letters to send home, step-by-step graphing directions, and grading rubrics.
