This is an activity/assignment for grades 7-9. It can be easily used with many subjects: Social Studies, Health, Math, Geography and Language Arts.
Students will be asked to choose 2 articles from the newspaper, mount each on to construction paper and answer a few questions.
It's a very simple activity on the surface, but its power lies in how deep you encourage your students to delve into the articles and the questions that you choose to ask and how you choose to link your curriculum.
I have included 4 examples of how you may incorporate this activity into your classroom (Math, Social Studies, Language Arts and Geography).
I have included a student sample article and answers.
As well, I have included a brief note to post in your staffroom to help get the papers that you need.
This activity/assignment is VERY versatile!
Kids love it because it incorporates all learning styles.
Teachers love it because it's easy to differentiate (shorter articles, captions only, analyzing pictures and headlines etc.)
It makes the students become more aware of the world around them, while pulling in your curriculum content and skills (examples: summarizing, visualizing, parts of speech, map skills, asking questions etc.).
As an added bonus, kids love being able to write directly on to what they're reading - this activity allows for and encourages this.

I have been teaching for 6 years now. I currently teach Grade 7 Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Health but I have taught grades 3 to 9, multiple subjects. My passion is teaching Math, for sure. I love the challenges that middle school students bring to the room every day. It's a very special age to be a part of. They teach me so much.
