This lesson contains four different nonfiction reading packets. Each packet has articles centered around a common theme. The articles were specifically designed to help students identify text structures, point of view, and fact and opinion. They can be used for independent reading, partner work, guided or shared reading. There is a response sheet included with each article. I have also included some links to free articles found on Time for Kids, Natural Geographic for Kids, and Scholastic News websites. These articles fit nicely into each of the four themes presented in this lesson. They also lend themselves to the work on text structures and author's point of view. I have also included in the lesson plan sample work by students as well as an answer key for each article. The answer key is just sample responses and your actual student response will vary.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 15 years of teaching experience in the 2nd - 5th grades in both New York City and California. The bulk of my experience has been working in low-income schools with diverse academic needs ranging from non-English speakers to GATE students. I have GATE certification as well as extensive professional development training in writers' workshop, guided and shared reading. I have also taught 2nd grade in Mexico City and speak fluent Spanish.
