Synopsis: Autumn is time of celebration. It is a time when you think of fun with leaves, school starting, and celebrating Halloween. In a town with the Herdmans, it is a little different. You think of any kind of fall disaster that can happen. That is why the mayor and the school principal decided to cancel the town’s trick-or-treating and celebrate it in school, instead.
At first every child in town is mad about this. When they find it is at school, they aren’t interested in it. Then they find out the Herdmans aren’t coming. Suddenly, the thought of making it through the night without getting jumped and spray-painted doesn’t sound half bad.
Unfortunately, the Herdmans find out the rest of the kids are excited they aren’t coming to the Halloween party at school. This changes everything…
This print and use workbook is a child-directed literature study that requires no teacher or parental prep time.
The format is an exciting new approach to studying literature. Each page engages the student in many interesting activities. Children will explore new vocabulary in its context and answer questions that involve them in the story. Learners reflect on their own experiences to better understand those of the characters. This process ensures full comprehension of the novel. Additional activities involve illustrating, sequencing, analyzing characters, and point of view.
The literature study concludes with an organized and detailed book summary. A simple rubric is included for grading the book summary.

However, I wish there were more comprehension questions added in multiple chopice format for the special education students that are included in the classroom. We are a re fully included school, so the special education students are included with adaptations made. I especially liked the "illustrate a scene" from the story worksheet.

I understand your situation completely. What I have done in the past with my special needs students is turn the questions into discussions with those students. They usually do much better when talking out the question rather than writing out one. Many are resistant to writing because they know it is a weakness of theres. I hope this suggestion helps. I loved this packet. I especially liked the "illustrate a scene" from the story worksheet. My students all drew different scenes from the novel and wrote captions to go with their drawings.

I was very happy with this product. I especially liked the character traits and short answers. I felt it was very useful especially for teachers from Ohio who have to give the achievement test.
