Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a Newberry Award Winner. This unit includes vocabulary and comprehension questions. There are answer keys for the vocabulary sheets.
The focus on the vocabulary sheets is using context clues. Questions are both literal and inferential. Another focus for each chapter is Predicting and Character Analysis. There are 66 pages.
This is an exciting story about the German occupation of Denmark and the struggle of the Danish Resistance to smuggle the Jewish people to Sweden. They actually did smuggle nearly 7,000 people!
Although this book is fiction, some of the characters and events are based on stories told to Lois Lowry by a friend of hers who lived in Copenhagen during the occupation.
Students are captivated by the characters and their struggles!
I have included a Research Project that students can do about Hitler, the Nazis, or the Jewish People during the war.

Lots of great discussion questions to guide reading. However, I have decided to supplement this with another Number the Stars Unit that I purchased. I like to use more graphic organizers to help elicit responses versus all written out comprehension questions.

Great unit! The only thing I do not like is the background printing on each page. I feel it is distracting to the questions.

I taught for 38 years in Elementary Education. I was on the Math Best Practices Team for Minnesota, the Reading Committee, MEEP, the Sci/Math Team, an IGE Team Leader, the computer specialist for our elementary school for 28 years, as well as many other committees and teams throughout my years as a teacher. I retired but continue to substitute in our school for grades K - 12.
