This 16-page, in-depth study guide accompanies the Fagles translation of Homer's Odyssey. Beginning with a basic summary of the epic, vital background, relevant literary devices, and overarching thematic questions, the packet also provides an explanation and activity related to the epic's chronology before launching into book by book reading prompts for note-taking. Each book (or chapter) entry provides a list of the book's key characters, along with 6-8 study questions that require close reading. Guide also includes a comprehensive writing prompt regarding the morals presented in Books 9-12. This set of materials is designed with an honors curriculum in mind, but can easily be amended and scaffolded for a mainstream course. Incorporating complete materials for 11 of the epic's 24 books, this four week unit emphasizes the most engaging components of the classic, while providing brief summaries of the slower, more abstract portions of the text.
