This handout can be used to assess students' understanding of the story or can be used to generate discussions among students. It forces students to think critically about the setting, the characters, and the author's purpose. Sample Question #1: How does the setting described in the very beginning of the story both reveal the time period in which the story takes place and reflect the characters of George and Lennie? Sample Question #2: Why did Steinbeck choose not to give Curley's wife a name?
