Oh Boy Literacy is a collection of literacy activities focused on topics that appeal to many boys. This listing is for the SPORTS-THEMED packet.
Although the activities were created with boys in mind, they definitely work for girls too. They make a perfect addition to interest-based centers in a differentiated classroom.
This packet includes the following:
Tips for Reading and Writing With Boys: Share these reminders with parents so they can keep them in mind as students work on literacy activities at home.
Sports-themed Literacy Cards: You can cut and attach these to a binder clip for parents to pull out for informal literacy work at home. They’re great to send home over long vacations to encourage fun literacy practice.
Sports Log: A place for kids to keep their sports-themed writing. You can use the generic pages and let students choose their own topics. (Ideas are included.) You can also use the prompt pages provided. Both drawing and writing prompts are included. -Great as daily writing, center work or homework.
Speedy Reading Response Page: Use this half-sheet response page as a quick way to check in with students to see what they’ve been reading.
Sports-Themed Spelling Practice Activities: Ideas to practice spelling list words and frequently missed words from writing. Perfect for homework or word work centers.
Sporty Vocabulary: A vocabulary practice sheet that students can use to learn new words related to sports.
My Sports Lists: A place to record lists of all things related to sports. (Best games, favorite athletes, etc…)
Sports-Themed Paper: Four styles of paper that students can use as stationery or for any other writing projects.
Sports-Themed Scavenger Hunt: Kids can use research skills to find the answers to trivia questions, then create their own scavenger hunts.
Kid-Friendly Standards Bookmarks: A quick reference to help kids and parents keep the key learning objectives in mind as they read, write and communicate. (Modified from the Common Core Anchor Standards for ELA, National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, Council of Chief State School Officers)
Sports-Themed Book List: Give this list to parents for home reading ideas, or use it to expand the sports section in your class library.
