What a great way to teach about pioneer life through the use of award-winning literature. This thematic unit gives the teacher as well as the students a break from the traditional social studies textbook. After reading both Caddie Woodlawn and The Cabin Faced West, students complete activities which include comparing/contrasting characters as well as novels. This multi-discipline unit will be a big hit with your students as they learn about Americans' journey west.

I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas. In addition to my regular classroom duties, I have taught in a Basic Skills summer school program for many years as well as taught workshops to co-workers in whole language and technology.
