Florida Governor Charlie Crist (name can be changed) has requested our assistance in cleaning up an oil spill off the Florida coast caused by a recent hurricane. Unfortunately, most of the “high tech” materials that we use to clean up oil spills has been destroyed by the hurricane and the only materials available to us are some common household materials: a dropper, plastic spoon, cotton balls, a piece of nylon stocking, paper towels, a piece of plastic wrap, and wood chips. We can only take the necessary equipment with us to the spill site and have only a few hours to determine which household material is the best in removing oil. Your task is to determine which material is the best in cleaning oil from water. Hurry….we’re running out of time! Included is a PPT to explain the Exxon Valdez Oil disaster and the student lab sheet. Students complete the lab along with the 4 reflection questions.
