Olive's Ocean Novel Study contains standards based research projects, writing assignments, vocabulary suggestions, small group work, and many other activities! It engages students by using multiple intelligence-from film and music correlations to geography and real world connections. This study works well with fifth graders through high school students. The book by Kevin Henkes takes Olive through her summer vacation after just being visited by the mother of a student in her class that was killed in an accident. This novel is very relatable to students and deals with themes of popularity, coming of age, relationships, death, and many more!

Subject Area:

After teaching seventh and eighth grade Language Arts at a private school, I found it necessary to stay home with my children. Not yet ready to return to the classroom, but aching to stay atop trends in the field, I began volunteering at our local Alternative High School. I loved working with the students one-on-one and individualizing instruction. I was soon offered a position to help begin a preschool developing a classroom for 3 and 4 year olds. Through this, I am beginning to fully understand how important patience and finding ways to motivate and challenge students can be in impacting student learning!
