If you have ever watched any sporting or Olympics events in which athletes are competing to get the fastest time, you will see that many times the winner will win by 1 second or less. A race could even be decided by one tenth or one hundredth of a second. In this experiment, students will get a feel for how fast a second really is as well as how fast a tenth of a second is. They will also use math computation to subtract with decimals to the hundredths place as well as simple division and multiplication.

I taught middle school Reading and Language Arts for eight years, ranging from ESL to Advanced levels. I also taught one year of sixth grade Social Studies (U.S. History the main focus). I have also taught multiple subjects to fifth graders during summer breaks, including a lot of math. Before all of this, I substituted in all grade levels, including a half-year in one second grade class. Lately, I have been tutoring grades 3-12 in Language Arts and Math mostly, including ESL with a South Korean group of kids.
