2011 Coretta Scott King Author Award! This book was also a finalist for the 2010 National Book Award(Young People's Literature).
This 25 page packet provides the teacher or aide with a ready-to-use workbook for students who are reading the novel, One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia! It includes a vocabulary bookmark for student use as well as a 19 page student booklet (plus answer key) designed to reinforce essential reading and writing skills for students in grades 5-8. Skills addressed include visualizing, determining author's purpose, inferring, explaining, comprehension, questioning, comparing/contrasting, recognizing point-of-view, vocabulary, and using context clues.
The student booklet divides the text into seven reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. In addition there is a culminating activity at the end of the booklet. It is designed for independent work so that students may be working on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. This book was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Award in Young People's Literature!
It is 1968 and 11 year old Delphine and her two younger sisters are flown to California to visit a mother they hardly know. They find life with her to be quite different from the life they knew in Brooklyn. They feel shunned by their mother and are sent to a Black Panther camp where they get an unexpected education. This book provides wonderful character portraits along with an insight into the 1960s in Oakland. Delightfully rich and descriptive writing.
Appropriate for students in grades 5-8. Reading level approximately 5th grade.

Very pleased with the thoroughness of this product. This is a great story. Ms. Martin has created a wonderful product to allow students to enjoy the rich history of a forgotten era and a storyline that many young people may be able to relate to.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My 20-plus years of teaching included 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades in Colorado, California, New Jersey, and Illinois. I've recently retired and now find myself as busy as ever! While I taught I loved creating meaningful and stimulating worksheets for my students, especially literature packets...but finding the time for it was always a challenge. Now I can spend a significant amount of time creating and publishing to help other teachers who are too busy teaching to have time to create as well!
