This is an interesting lab that involves extracting DNA from onions. In the end you have a layered liquid in which the DNA will be floating at the separation. When you dip a hook to catch the DNA, it will look like heat waves in the top layer. The difficulty of the lab is not much and it can easily fit into a 40 min class period.
