This guide is a companion to the new writing units on opinion writing for the early grades. You will receive a guide to using checklists with young writers, a pacing guide for the unit, a mentor text with various components highlighted to facilitate student understanding, and a variety of paper with self-checklist rubrics to guide student writing. You will also receive a large group checklist, peer checklist, and a variety of mentor texts to use when teaching.
Opinion writing is now required in kindergarten and first grade based on the common core. This unit outlines how to successfully achieve this goal, while providing concrete and relevant examples to your students. They will be able to write opinions, back them with reasons and evidence, and understand how to use letters as a genre for persuasive writing.

I have been working with young children since I was sixteen years old, and was a counselor in training at summer camp. After seven years counseling, directing, teaching,and organizing camping and outdoor education programs, I began pursuing my teaching certification. I interned and worked at a Head Start, a daycare, and a Reggio Emilia based child development center with young children, all before finding my home as a kindergarten teacher for the public school system. I have now had the honor and privilege of teaching kindergartners for six years, and each year has brought more adventures, learning, and joy!
