Setting behavioral standards and building classroom community are two important objectives teachers must accomplish at the beginning of every year. Using the Our Important Class Words workbook in your primary classroom will help you hit both targets at once. Nicknamed The Bear Book by the kids in my classes because of the teddy bears that populate it, this thirteen page booklet illustrates six important words that can help build positive classroom climate and encourage appropriate behavior - Think, Helpful, Kind, Share, Quiet, and Listen. Each word is presented on it own page inside a banner held by a smiling bear. Underneath each word are short, easy-to-read sentences that demonstrate what students can do to show that they are being mindful of that word. Underneath the word Helpful, for example, are the sentences “Answer Questions” and “Lend a hand.” Following this is a second page with the word presented several times in dash letter format for students to trace along with a picture showing a child doing something helpful. Students are encouraged to color the picture as well.
