This PowerPoint meant to be used as a starting point covering the basics of Reconstruction from Abraham Lincoln through Andrew Johnson. It is visually appealing with many hi-resolution photographs and other images, many of them taken from the Library of Congress, all of them are in the public domain. The tug-of-war between Republicans and Democrats is covered, specifically the struggle between Johnson and the Radical Republicans including the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in addition to the Freedmen's Bureau, The Civil Rights Acts, Black Codes, the start and rise of the Ku Klux Klan, Plessy v. Ferguson and Jim Crow Laws ("Separate But Equal"). This has been a great intro PowerPoint for my 8th graders over the years and has been used by several teachers in our building and has been revised yearly by myself. There are also links to several YouTube videos including a short, but great, video on the rise of the KKK in the 20th century made by National Geographic, and another on KKK threats against President Obama pre-2008 election. There are also links to the Southern Poverty Law Center website, and their "HATE MAP" for a conversation with students on hate groups in American today.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

In 2012 I was chosen the Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for the state of Oregon and was awarded the American Historical Associations Beveridge Family History Teaching Prize for innovation in the teaching of history. I have previously taught all four years of High School social studies including Government and Economics, in an International Baccalaureate Small School within a large urban High School. I currently teach 8th grade Honors US History in Oregon in a 1:1 ratio computer lab predominantly using curriculum of my own design. I am also the Department Chair and a leadership/steering team member and a Data Team Leader for our school. I am also our sites EdTech Cadre representative and also teach an elective called Games, Computers, and Programming to both 7th and 8th graders. In addition, I am also an instructor in a Masters of Education credentialing program near Portland, Oregon where I teach Social Studies methods courses and Middle School Philosophy.
