Are you looking for a fun and festive book project for grades 1 through 5? The Pumpkin Book Project is ALWAYS an annual favorite in my classroom. Although it was designed to be used in October, the character trait pages that are included would be useful year-round.
I've taught Kindergarten through 3rd and have used this project with each of those grade levels for the past nine years. I finally organized and updated all of my resources to create this kit.
The students can use any book and the included pages are flexible for different activities and ages. You can pick which you want your students to do.
I currently teach third grade and use this project to focus heavily on identifying character traits. You could also use the pages to focus on story mapping, sequencing, summarizing or any other reading response you pick.
The kit includes:
*2 cover sheets to create a packet to send home with your students.
*an overview of ideas on how to create the pumpkin characters
*a reading log to complete while reading the selected text
*a story map page
*a blueprint to design the project
*a page for the students to create a supply list
*an explanation of character traits and a list of traits
*pages to identify traits in a text and record evidence
*draft page
*a primary-aged pumpkin shape to complete
*a primary-ruled pumpkin project themed open ended page with space *for a drawing or photo
*an intermediate-ruled pumpkin project themed open ended page with *space for a drawing or photo
*6 pages of sample photos
*planning/pacing calendar and rubric checklist

I absolutely loved doing this project...I had 100% participation from my 33 students - unbelievable! I had them on display for parent-teacher conferences, and all the parents really loved seeing how creative everyone was. I will definitely do this every year!

This is the first year we have tried this in first grade. It was a huge success and the pumpkins were so creative. We will use it again next year. Some kindergarten parents have already asked if we will do this next year in first grade!

I used this project for the first time this year, 2012, and plan to make it a regular part of my curriculum. It worked perfectly for a combo 3/4 class. The parents attended an Open House viewing of the projects and just loved it. I even made my own pumpkin into Miss Piggy. It's a winner!
