This lesson plan goes into ways of finding the vertex of a parabola. In spite of what sounds like a limited goal, it really goes further – getting students to think how to approach a problem in multiple ways and teaching other concepts on the way. As such it is suitable for a group project as well as for individuals. The methods and concepts used include: Use of a given formula, the mean of the roots (real or imaginary), the translation operation, use of technology, and (optionally) the use of differential calculus.
