Partial Products is a mental math strategy for double digit multiplication. It can be used as a replacement for the commonly-used "long multiplication." The primary reason for teaching this strategy (as with all mental math strategies) is that it will improve your students' understanding of number. Rather than memorizing a series of confusing steps as in long multiplication, students will use their knowledge of place value and the real meaning of each numeral.
This strategy unit provides all of the resources that you will need for teaching the partial products strategy. Section 1 teaches 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication and Section 2 teaches 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. Depending on the grade level that you teach, Section 2 might be somewhat difficult for the majority of your class, but may be useful as enrichment for some students.
I really love all of the hardwork and thought that went into making this unit! Excellent source!

I teach the "Partial Product" method of multiplication to my students. I find it much more developmentally appropriate for them. This pack has given me more resources to use not only during the unit, but also for students who still need additional practice once we have finished the unit.
