In this engaging lesson, students research the patent process and use the a patent search engine to view an analyze actual patents. Students then watch the movie "Flash of Genius" and analyze and discuss the complex issues explored in the film, such as ethics in engineering and boundaries of design. Lesson is correlated with both NETS and Standards for Technical Literacy, and includes an anticipatory set, 4 assignments, and an essay assessment. Lesson covers 6-7 45 minute periods.
