You have everything you need to have a successful author study unit on Patricia Polacco! As students explore Patricia Polacco books, they will be learning skills such as character traits, theme, setting, sequencing and summarizing, story plot, and more! The unit is interactive and invites cooperative learning and critical thinking.
The unit also includes a 33 piece, full-color Bulletin Board Set to use throughout your unit! Add book cover pictures up after reading it with the class, display theme cards to remind students of what they are learning, and get students excited with Fun Facts About Patricia Polacco. To help teach each lesson there is a SMARTBoard presentation with a total of 14 slides that go hand-in-hand with the student handouts. If you do not have a SMARTBoard, you can simply create these charts with PowerPoint or on large chart paper as they are simple and easy to create.
There are a total of 12 Lessons plus a response to literature writing piece. The writing piece requires students to apply everything they have learned throughout the unit and bring it together in a guided format.
The unit takes about 3 weeks to complete, plus the response to literature (optional), depending the speed of your class. The lessons include the use of the SMARTBoard, read-alouds, small group activities and more! The documents are kept in a zip file. Be sure to check out the extensive sample to see the activity sheets, SMARTBoard slides, Bulletin Board Set, and more!
Another great unit! Your work is so thorough and meaningful! Thank you :)

Very excited to start my author study unit this month. Thank you for this awesome resource.
I really love your unit and plan on starting it tomorrow in my classroom. Just wondering about your choice of two books...The Lemonade Stand and Mr. Lincoln...both of these deal with some pretty difficult issues for 3rd grade. Patricia Polacco is a wonderful author and I love her books. Thanks for all the time you put into your unit!
Hi there! When I did this author study, it was with 4th graders, so they were one year older which I think makes a difference in their ability to process the difficult topics, particularly with The Lemonade Club. I also think Polacco did an excellent job talking about a tough topic in a way that was appropriate for students. As for Mr. Lincoln, I chose that book because I taught in the city and had several students who I thought could benefit from the lesson of turning hatred into something good as well as learning that some of the things that they learned from their parents wasn't necessarily right (like prejudice and hatred). However, if you think these topics are too mature for your students, the books can be easily left out of the author study without effecting the rest of the content! Thanks for purchasing this unit and I hope you and your students love it! Thanks!!
Thanks for the heads up for other teachers! You're right, Patricia Polacco, as a rule, writes many books that include more mature themed topics. She does an amazing job, though, talking about those issues with sensitivity towards kids! Thanks for the feedback!

I can't wait to use this with my enrichment class in the morning. I teach 4th grade and want to make the enrichment time fun for both me and the kids by teaching with picture books.
Looking forward to using this in my classroom in conjunction with our Patricia Polacco unit!

Wow! That must have been awesome to see Patricia Polacco in person! I'm jealous! She's such a great author and kids can really relate to her! Enjoy the unit!

Rachael:
Your work has come highly recommended by some of my "teachers in the trenches"! I just purchased this author study and can't wait to get started after our mid winter recess. I do not have my copy of Thundercake at home but wonder if there isn't a typo on page 32. The first direction says "Place the cake in the over" I believe it should be Place the cake in the oven. Since this is a pdf and I can't change, any chance I could get the corrected page? If indeed it needs to be corrected?
Many thanks

Hi,
I just purchased your Patricia Polacco study and love it :) However I do not have a smartboard and understand that I need to recreate the slides. But I can't open it to view in order to recreate! Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for your purchase and I'm glad you love the unit. I'm sorry you don't have a smartboard...every teacher should have that priviledge! I'd be happy to send you screen shots (pictures of the actual slide) of all the slides so that you can have the pictures in a PDF document and just print it out and have as part of your files. I would just need your email so that I can send it to you directly. Does that make sense? Let me know and thanks again!
I have taught for 5 years in both 3rd and 4th grade in an urban district. I am certified in General Education grades 1-6. I received my masters in Childhood Literacy.
