Peanut Butter and Jelly Time is a fun way to partner students up to get them talking about math and solving math word problems together.
This kit includes:
- posters (with directions and rules for the activity)
- journal covers (both color and black/white)
- journal pages
- 24 different word problems
- an answer key for the teacher
There are 24 different word problems: 6 of each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). 3 pages of each card are included so that you can group up to 30 students into 15 pairs.
A blank set of cards is also included so that you can create your own word problems.
With Peanut Butter and Jelly Time you can group students quickly and with ease. Each card includes a number (so student knows who their partner will be) and a peanut butter jar or jelly jar graphic to signal if they will be peanut butter or jelly during the activity.
All you need to do is print out enough cards for your students, cut them out, and pass them out. Students will quickly find their partner and will sit with them. Provide students with a few moments to read the word problem on the card or read it together as a class. Then say, "Peanut Butter, Go" and the student who has the peanut butter jar graphic on their card will start talking first about what operation they think should be used and how they would solve the problem. Then say, "Jelly, Go" and the student with the Jelly graphic on their card will discuss the problem next. Then you say, "Peanut Butter, Jelly," and both students can talk together and solve the problem. Students can solve the problem on whiteboards or you can create a Peanut Butter and Jelly Journal for them with the pages provided.
