Interdisciplinary 3 to 4 week Unit covers a novel study of Pam Conrad's book, Pedro's Journal. Story of a young ship's boy on Columbus's first voyage. Includes historically accurate notes and research for lecture or student handouts, quizes and tests for literature, creative writing and rubrics based on 6-Trait Writing. Instructions for aging paper and making an authentic looking journal for creative writing as a final project included. Rationale, benchmarks and requirement handouts. Unit takes 3-6 weeks depending on student ability and age as well as amoung of class or homework time used. This is extremely motivating, enjoyable for students and covers a great deal of benchmarks for three academic areas. Display options include making a cardboard model of a ship and hanging journals from the ceiling with twine or clipped to fish net or sails of the ship. Use blue garbage bags bunched up for water as a base and viola! Gorgeous display for open house or conferences!
