A mountain climber relies upon his ability to throw a grappling hook in order to reach the next plateau.

This performance task requires students to demonstrate understanding of quadratic functions by modeling vertical motion with quadratic functions and using skills of solving quadratic equations to solve problems in context.

Two versions of the task are included to account for varying levels of student achievement. Version A is appropriate for any student studying quadratic functions and vertical motion, while Version B contains a level of abstraction that makes it more appropriate for students in an advanced algebra course (Algebra 2) or for students working at an honors level.

Also included in this download is an answer key, a comprehensive grading rubric and a cover page with enduring understandings, common core standards alignment, and teacher notes.

I will be teaching algebra to gifted 7th graders. Do you think this would be way over their heads?

As long as they are already successful with linear systems, I see no problem with the regular version of this assessment for 7th graders. But if you are teaching Common Core algebra (ie gr 8), I believe it stops before quadratics. Let me know how it goes! -Emily
