Peter's Space is a short ghost story (with exercises) is about a young couple in Manhattan, New York. The young lady is giving a short history lesson about old New Your City to her date, who is new to this city and this country when they are surprised by a ghostly appearance of Peter Stuyvesant himself.
Peter's Space is one of eighteen stories in the U.S.History based on True Ghost Stories That Teach Historically Based Stories with Content Area Connections by Lonnie Dai Zovi.
These five pages contain a high interest short story written at a 4-5th grade reading level, but of interest to all students, 4th grade to adult ESL,GED, and Citizenship classes.
Besides enjoying the story (who doesn't love a good ghost story?), the students will learn, review, discuss. investigate, and write about :

True Ghost Stories That Teach Historically Based Stories with Content Area Connections by Lonnie Dai Zovi
All the stories in this collection capitalaize on the students' great interest in ghosts, and other weird phenomena. These stories take advantage of this interest by using the stories to:
Practice reading
Improve comprehension
Expand vocabulary
Highlight or teach certain aspects of language
Teach or review history
Make connections to other content areas
Stimulate discussions
Write interesting paragraphs or simple essays
To take full advantage of the True Ghost Stories That Teach, the students' should read the stories aloud, dramatizing and using voices and other sound effects (readers' theater). The stories have been designed for readers of all ages, as have the exercises. These exercise may be done together as a whole group, partners or individually.
It would be a help if each student had access to, or could make a time line as well as make his own simple map of the U.S that they could add to each time they read on of the stories. Also, they may need reference books, Internet or a dictionary.

Thank you so much. These stories are good for all students, but I particularly like them for my newcomers, ELLS, (After their language abilities reach intermediate level)because it is an interesting and easier way of learning the history of the U.S./
