This is a complete month of original Common Core aligned phonological awareness curriculum. If you follow our curriculum in your classroom, which requires 15 minutes a day on the first day and 10 minutes a day for the next four days, you will see amazingly ridiculous phonological awareness growth in your students. This program is tried and true, used in K and first grade classrooms at my school. This curriculum is based on 16 phonological awareness skills that we have identified in the Common Core for ELA. The activities/lessons are text-based, meaning the words and phrases for the phonological awareness lessons (which we call "listening games") are based on popular read aloud titles (books not included) from your monthly curricular themes. This program was written around the Kindergarten and First Grade Common Core standards and skills including the Common Core document, Appendix A, based on phonological awareness research and the general progression of phonological awareness skills in the foundational reading process. This curriculum is also appropriate for Pre-K and anyone working in a teaching capacity with K or 1st grade students, ELL's & students in Speech. We are so sure you are going to love our phonological awareness curriculum after using it for just one week, that we think you'll come back to purchase the monthly bundles. The months we have up so far are November and December, but we intend to have all 12 months up by spring of 2013.

The January bundle includes four weeks of lessons based on the following holiday related read-aloud titles and ideal for making text to text comparisons:
Snow Day! by Lester Laminack
Martin's Big Words by by Doreen Rappaport
The Hat by Jan Brett
The Emperor's Egg by Martin Jenkins

The only PREP required to implement this curriculum is you locating the book. Once you download and print the lessons included here (28 pages) there is NO MORE PREP. You're ready.

Hi,
I have one more question. I am using this with my PK4 boy who is a mid kindergarten reader. He responds with nonsense ryhming words about 1/2 the time. I echo his word and offer a real word ryhme too. Is this ok or this there a better way to get a real word? Or is it fine for his age?

I also use this with my after school handwriting tutoring for Kinder & 1st. We use the wood sticks from Mat Man to tap out the syallables in the words. But they usually come up with real word ryhmes.

Thanks,
Doni

Hi! Generating nonsense words but still words that rhyme is ok for your child's age, this shows me that he understands what rhyming means, but that he doesn't have enough experience with language and words to know the difference from real words and non-real words...two different skills....rhyme sense and word sense. I hope this helps. When he generates the nonsense words, too, like when he says bim, as rhyming with swim for example, you can say, "Bim, what's that? or What's a bim?"

Hi Melissa!
We do have plans to create another 12-month set so Kinder and 1st grade would have and use different sets. However, there are no phonological awareness or phonemic awareness skills identified in the 2nd grade Common Core Foundational Skills Strand for ELA. In fact, in 2nd grade, the standards skip and go straight to 2.RFS.3 (phonics) and 2.RFS.4 (fluency). However, we both know that students come to 2nd grade with foundational literacy deficits in phonological awareness, so we hope you'll use our bundles to fill those gaps. Please also know that when we finish all twelve months, we will be bundling them all together at a discount.
Thanks for the feedback and question!
Take care,
Jen & Kathi

I am working on the PA assessment. It should be done and uploaded by the middle of January. We will include in all past and future bundles and sell it separately. Thanks for keeping me on my toes! ;-) Jen
