PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a complete set (12 months) of original Common Core aligned phonological awareness curriculum...one lesson for every day of the year (320 pages). If you've enjoyed our monthly bundles, you're going to love this because it's all the months bundled together in one easy download and offered at a 20% discount over buying each monthly individually. This is a single user license however, so if you are planning on adopting this curriculum across your grade level or in your building (for grade levels and interventionists), you will need to purchase addition licenses utilizing the "buy multiples licenses" option at check-out, which is an even bigger saving when you purchase more than one, and you don't have to buy them all at the same time to get the multiple license discount...once you buy one, all future purchases are at the multiple license price, which we are offering at 35% discount.

If you follow our curriculum in your classroom, which requires 15 minutes a day on the first day and 10 minutes a day for the next four days, you will see amazingly ridiculous phonological awareness growth in your students. This program is tried and true, used our K and first grade classrooms. This curriculum is based on 16 phonological awareness skills that we have identified in the Common Core for ELA. The activities/lessons are text-based, meaning the words and phrases for the phonological awareness lessons (which we call "listening games") are based on popular read aloud titles (books not included) from your monthly curricular themes. This program was written around the Kindergarten and First Grade Common Core standards and skills including the Common Core document, Appendix A, based on phonological awareness research and the general progression of phonological awareness skills in the foundational reading process. This curriculum is also appropriate for Pre-K and anyone working in a teaching capacity with K or 1st grade students, or older students with phonological awareness deficiencies. *see our note on the last page of the preview file about using this product with older students.*

The only PREP required to implement this curriculum is locating the weekly book. We offer two preparation options. The first option is paperless: once you download the file, email it yourself and open it on your iPad in iBooks as a pdf file and teach the lessons from your iPad in your lap. The second option is to print and spiral bind the pages together for ease in folding it back while it's sitting on your lap. After downloading and emailing or printing and binding, there is NO MORE PREP. You're ready to roll!

If you would like to be automatically notified when we add the Two Peas Common Core Aligned Phonological Awareness Assessment, please click FOLLOW ME at the top of this page. We appreciate your business and look forward to helping you help your little ones on the road to becoming readers!

I love your materials and use this curriculum regularly with some of my students. I am a speech pathologist in a school for the deaf and this offers a nice routine of phonological awareness practice to use with my students. I only have one criticism. Phonological awareness focuses on the sounds of words rather than the spelling therefore words beginning with /t/ and words beginning with /tr/ are not the same. In some of your phoneme discrimination activities, you have /tr/ words as /t/ words and if a student is using listening alone they will sound different. I have also noticed that your activities for discriminating the medial sound really are targeted at identifying the vowel. For example, one of your words was "old" and my student correctly identified /l/ as the medial sound but you were looking for /o/. Using CVC words for this portion may eliminate that confusion. That being said, I love your bundles and appreciate all of the work you put into them!

On  February 11, 2014,  Buyer asked:
Can you tell me what the Artic words are and what you do with them? thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  February 27, 2014Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
That is just the list of words from the story that work best for the skill instruction. We weren't going to include them at all, but thought teachers might want to do some vocabulary extensions or what not, so we decided to leave the list in. The "artic" comes from the word articulation, as much of phonological awareness also falls into the speech and articulation realm of learning.
On  February 4, 2014Ashley Willmont (TpT Seller) asked:
Hi there! This is my first year as an ESOL teacher. I pull out separate groups of K, 1, and 2 students, about 5-6 students each group. I realize you don't know my kiddos, but which grade level would you say this curriculum would best be suited for? I was thinking it was too high for my kinders because most are just now learning the English language a little at a time. I think all of the oral talking from me would just be too much and I'd get blank stares. However, my firsties are pretty good with understanding English when it's spoken to them. That's the grade level I'm thinking of using it with, but I wanted to get your opinion. Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  February 5, 2014Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
I think you are right on target, however, the only real difference between the Kinder lessons and the first grade lessons is the book choice. We tried to pick books for the first grade set that were more appropriate for first grade, hence first grade vocabulary. However, PLEASE download the free week first and try it out with your groups and see what you think. After you teach it for a week, you'll get a feel for the weekly format...that doesn't change, nor do the skills practiced. They spiral each week based on the foundational phonemic awareness skills in the Common Core for K and 1.
Thanks,
Jen & Kathi

Hi! The assessment is done but the teacher directions, (Administration of the Assessment) for asking each question is not. I'd be happy to email you the assessment and what I have so far with the understanding that it's not quite TpT-ready yet.
Let me know.

Hi! I'm a prep (kindergarten) teacher in Australia and I love the idea of this pack!! Just wondering how you would recommend I implement it given that the start of our school year is in January? And that we don't have Thanksgiving. Thanks!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 22, 2014Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
Hi Jem,
Thanks for the great question! We have some other Aussies that are using our curriculum and have given us some great feedback regarding our product. Given you start your school year in January, you might want to start with our September bundle since it has many titles that are best for the beginning of the year. If you download the preview at the following link, you can see all the titles for all the months (for set 1). You might want to mix and match out books with those from the author study or other months for example to replace the Thanksgiving book in November.

Like the weekly schedule shows, the story is read aloud on Monday and the listening games are Tuesday-Friday, using words and phrases from the book on Monday. If you want, and have time, you may revisit the book anytime throughout the week.

I recently bought your Kevin Henkes pack and have really enjoyed using it. I am thinking about purchasing the remainder of the packets but have a question. Do the skills get progressively more difficult? At some point, do you start addressing comprehension, fluency and accuracy in the plans?

Thanks,
Julee

Great. We're glad you like phonological awareness curriculum. Our packs are just that...they spiral each week around the 16 phonological awareness skills identified in the common core addressed in the Reading Foundational Skills (RFS) strand of the Common Core for ELA.

Thank you for your quick response! I'm a Lead Teacher in charge of remediating 18 struggling kindergarteners. I'm using "Listening Games" in a 2 students to 1 teacher ratio. I love the connection to books. It makes sense to use quality literature so the children can make those important connections between the story and the words. I'm a big fan of yours and appreciate the work you do with Two Peas in a Pod and Hello Literacy. P.S. I purchased the August bundle so I could get started. I loved using the book, "Where the Wild Things Are" because in August Kindergarteners are "little wild things". Thanks again!

Awesome! We are so glad to hear your story. Although we believe that our curriculum is ideal for core PA instruction in the primary grades, we believe it perfect for as a primary intervention. All kids, and struggling kids need repitition, repitition, repitition...that's how our brain is wired, so the Two Peas curriculum helps them to hear it twice in a week, and then again and again in subsequent weeks. Thanks again! Good luck "taming" them. ;-) Jen & Kathi

I"m putting a purchase order together for "Listening Games" and the books that go with each month. Would you please tell me the authors for the following books so I purchase the correct ones? "Late for School", "The Hat", and "Snow Day". Thank you!

On  September 10, 2013Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
Yes, ma'am! The authors are:
Late for School by Mike Reiss
The Hat by Jan Brett
Snow Day by Lester Laminack

Also, the September title How I Became a Pirate is by Melinda Long (illustrated by David Shannon)

Thank you for your PO purchase! We really appreciate it! We had a school last week order 12 one-year bundles...we are beyond tickled!

I am getting ready to buy your curriculum. I never heard back from you. Can I use this with Pre-k 4?

On  September 3, 2013Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
Hi Nancy! We are so sorry. Yes, most of the skills are appropriate for pre-k. The skills that will be difficult for pre-k will be skill #8, #11, #15 and #16. You can download a free week which is a complete cycle to see how it goes, but the format doesn't change, just the books and the words.
Thanks for being persistent! :-)
Thank you!

Hey, ladies! I LOVE this curriculum book and am just about ready to purchase it.

Before I do, I have one question: Are you daily phonological awareness questions that go along with each day's lesson scaffolded so that there are developmentally easier questions in September? The lesson questions you have in your downloadable demo in December have to deal with students identifying individual phonemes. However, in September, as I'm learning as brand new kindergarten teacher, the students should really only be working with whole words through rhyming and syllable work. So, do you have your students identify individual phonemes right away?

I hope my question makes sense. :) Thank you!

On  August 22, 2013Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
Katherine thanks for the great question. It makes total sense that you are being advised as a new Kinder teacher to begin the year with a focus on rhyming and syllables. That would be developmentally very appropriate. Those skills are included in our PA lessons for that very reason. However, We included the other components of the Foundational Skills for differentiation purposes and to address all areas of Phonemic Awareness as called for by the Common Core. We would advise you to use the pacing for instruction set by your district for quarterly benchmarks. However, if your district doesn't have that, we recommend practicing all K skills each week so the repetition and exposure serve your children well by the end of the year. Have a great school year teaching Kinder.

Hi. I have purchased your program for September, though I would like it for the whole year. I just have to purchase a little at a time. I was wondering if you had a list of books that included the author for the entire year? I saw your book list but it does not include the author. Would it be possible to email it to me if you have it? Thanks so much. I can't wait to use it. You two are marvelous. Dfavero1@charter.net

I placed your product in my wish list section. It looks amazing and I am very interested;however I read the question and answer thread and found that you are creating another 12 month PA curriculum. I am a first grade teacher and am wondering if I should wait for that product to be released? I certainly want the program to be directly geared towards my grade level. Our K program does implement PA into their daily routines. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Also I downloaded a free product from your store that included a Fry Instant Words in Phrases list by Dr. Nancy Livingston. This list appears to be very different from the Fry Instant Phrases that I have from Dr. Edward Fry's word list. Do you think there is a difference in the educational value of the two lists? Should the lists be the same? I have created activities and homework activities based on my list. Thank you!

Dear PM121,
I just found this question, I'm sorry for the late reply. We have begun to create and upload the second set of lessons for first grade. The lessons themselves, the skills are not harder or more challenging, but the books we are choosing are at a first grade listening comprehension level, and more aligned to many of the mentor texts used for Reading and Writing Workshop in first grade. We have created all the first grade months yet though, we are working on it and will try to have all the months for first grade up by the end of December.

Then, regarding the phrases question...we don't have anything in our store with Phrases that's free, and neither does Jen. So perhaps you are thinking of someone else's store.

On  July 18, 2013Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
Begin with the August and September packets for the beginning of the year. The 16 phonological awareness skills covered in our curriculum, aligned to the common core, are a spiral review each week. For Pre-K, I would start with skills 1-8 (Tuesday and Wednesday in the bundle). Hope that helps.

I have reviewed your preview pack and I am very interested. It is a significant purchase, although I am sure it would be an invaluable one. The list of titles is wonderful however, there are only 8 of them that I actually own. I am wondering if, in your opinion, it would be easy to substitute the given titles for ones that I currently own once I became familiar with the "rhythm" of your literacy games. Thank you, in advance, for your time and response. Sincerely, Andrea

On  July 18, 2013Hello Two Peas in a Pod answered:
The lessons are "script" specific for each title chosen, so substituting titles would not match up with the content we have created. One of the features that make our curriculum unique is that the lessons *are* literature based and delivered in a meaningful context. We didn't have all of the books either, but 95% of them are available at the public library. Many of them we also picked up used on Amazon.
Thank you! Jen & Kathi

No question, you two are brilliant . I teach kindergarten in Missouri and our district uses Pathways to Reading a phonics and phonemic awareness based reading program. Needless to say I have seen the success of ensuring we work on the phonemic awareness component. kudos to both of you... I love how you tied a literature selection to each week's lessons...we just have a six day cycle of games and activities with given word groups---I see your way as more meaningful for the kiddos--and that usually means they are motivated to stay engaged.

Hi ladies! I am very intrigued by this product for my upper elementary students with fairly significant disabilities. In your description, I saw that you said "check the last page of the preview for info about using this with older students", but I didn't see it in the preview. I did read that you said the benefits have not been proven for older students, but I am addressing K/1st skills with some of my 4th/5th graders, so I feel this would be appropriate and very beneficial. Can you give me any extra guidance?
