This word sort is geared towards emergent/beginning readers, focusing on phonological awareness. I use these types of sorts in my class everyday and have had great results. After instituting word sorts my classes first sound fluency more than doubled as a whole, when measured using standard early literacy tests. Because this sort focuses on phonological awareness, which is the building block for reading success, this activity can be used with those that are learning to read as very young children all the way up to the older student that needs intervention to master the skill. The sort can be easily differentiated by making fewer choices available to the student, such as working with only two columns instead of three or leaving out some of the cards all together.
