The art lessons in Playing With Shapes focus on shape as an element of design. Two lessons use geometric shapes while two lessons use more organic shapes. Math connections are inherent in three of these lessons, which can be used to supplement certain geometry activities.

Each of the lessons includes the following:

- a list of art concepts and skills addressed
- materials list
- targeted art and related vocabulary
- detailed steps for introducing the lesson
- suggestions for related read-aloud books and art works
- directions for the art activity itself
- ideas for extending or varying the lessons
- ideas for looking at and discussing art
- ideas for connecting the activity to other curricular areas
- at least one writing extension

Because I teach in California, each lesson also includes a list of the California Visual Arts Standards addressed in the lesson.

The packet also includes a short note to teachers with tips or hints for teaching the lesson, and the url for my blog, where more general descriptions of many of my art lessons can be found.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a retired elementary school teacher / art educator, a working artist, and a writer. My professional teaching career began in San Jose, CA in 1988 in a third grade classroom. I soon moved to 2/3 combination classes and then spent four years teaching in a Multiage 1-2-3 program, which I started with a colleague. I have also taught a 4/5 combination class and Kindergarten, and have worked specifically with GATE students, ELL students, and at-risk students in all elementary grades, In my last two years of teaching before I retired in 2010, I taught Art to Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students for two years. For me, teaching Art was coming full circle. In addition to my work in the classroom, I have written articles on teaching, written lessons professionally, maintained a number of websites and blogs, and facilated math, language, and art workshops for teachers and parents.
