By Emily Kissner. Poetry can work wonderfully for guided reading. This page includes lesson plans and student activity sheets to go along with the classic poem "The Adventures of Isabel", widely available in poetry books and online. The emphasis in this lesson is on using the reading strategy of visualizing and using text details to support an answer. There is also a strategy to help students produce short answer responses for standardized tests.

I'm the author of two books for Heinemann: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling, and The Forest AND the Trees: Helping Readings Identify Important Details in Texts and Tests. Both books help teachers to figure out and meet the needs of their students. I have taught for thirteen years, working with seventh graders, sixth graders, and fourth graders.
