At the beginning of our poetry unit, I explain to my students that many songs are often poetic and contain the same poetic elements as many "regular" poems. Towards the end of the unit, I ask students to show what they've learned by choosing a school appropriate song to bring in and play for the class. Then they have to annotate it, telling us what it means and pointing out the literary elements that it contains. A fun project that students really enjoy!

I have worked with a number of grades, between the regular school year and summer school, including 6th - 12th grade. I originally started with an elementary background, and so I have some elementary materials as well. For the past few years, I moved up to higher education, teaching at a community college.
